Since April 2015 the Trust has been using the SmartyGrants on-line grants system. You will need to register with SmartyGrants and will not be able to use the same log-in details used for applications made prior to 2015. (After your first application through the SmartyGrants system, your organisation will need to use the same registration details for future applications.)
The Trust is interested in being a pro-active collaborator in funding significant projects that will have a direct positive impact on the economic and social well-being of the region. These Vital Impact Grants will only happen when funds allow and are likely to support significant regional projects that will have intergenerational impact and wide benefit.
Collaborative applications are encouraged and organisations already receiving funding from WEL Energy Trust may also apply.

Our Strategic Outcome Areas (What we Fund)
For all applications, priority will be given (in no particular order) to those that:
Strategic priority
Fall within the strategic priority areas for the Trust, or meet more than one strategic objective
Wide Reach
Are likely to have wide reach or high impact
Multiplier effect
Are likely to offer a “multiplier effect” through collaboration
Impact and outcomes
Balance need with impact and outcomes
Transformational change
Are likely to lead to transformational change
Fundraising abilities
Are from organisations that do not have significant independent fundraising abilities

Applications from outside the WEL Energy region (see map), unless there is evidence of significant benefit to communities within the WEL region
Individuals or commercial organisations
Projects that have already been completed by the date of grant notification
Loan repayments or guarantee assistance to applicants
Projects that may create a conflict of interest for the Trust or WEL Networks Ltd
Travel outside of the WEL region (but may make an exception for travel to events of national/international significance)
Projects that target Central/Local Government’s core areas of responsibility, eg, Local Government, Central Government
Lobby groups, eg, ratepayer/resident groups
Organisations with an overdue accountability report for previous funding received
Organisations that have already received a grant in the same calendar year
Trust Boundaries
WEL Region
The Trust will consider applications from eligible organisations within the WEL region. The Trust may fund projects outside this area if there is evidence of significant benefit to communities within the WEL region.
